Infrastructure and communication costs are significant in the overall installation costs of ITS especially where assets are needed in areas with no power and communications infrastructure available.

Providing off grid power requires specialist skills and knowledge. This is especially so in countries where the energy available from solar installations varies greatly by location, (whether more northerly or southerly) and by season.

Electro has approached the issue from two directions, both the design of more efficient electronics and the maximisation of generating capacity. A combination of wind and solar generation has proven particularly versatile and resilient providing power day and night, 365 days of the year.

The reduction in power consumption of equipment and modem / routers through design and technology advancement has also meant that wireless communication (3G, 4G etc.) is now a viable proposition.
